Unconquerable
My wife and I watched Invictus last night.
It’s the story of Nelson Mandela’s efforts to unify post-apartheid South Africa in supporting the Springbok rugby team’s efforts at the 1995 Rugby World Cup. In the story, shares the poem “Invictus” (written in 1875 by William Ernest Henley) with François Pienaar, captain of the Springbok team, to help inspire him to lead the underdog team to victory.
...Out of the night that covers me, Black as the pit from pole to pole, I thank whatever gods may be For my unconquerable soul.
In the fell clutch of circumstance I have not winced nor cried aloud. Under the bludgeonings of chance My head is bloody, but unbowed.
